Eight new Volvo sleeper buses to join KSRTC SWIFT fleet

Trivandrum: The first eight completely built sleeper coach by Volvo Buses India will be handed over to KSRTC this month. The 15m sleeper coach developed on the class-leading Volvo B11R chassis will be used for KSRTC SWIFT long-distance services.

According to a press release from the Office of the Chairman and Managing Director of KSRTC, in addition, KSRTC will be getting 20 semi-sleeper and 72 air suspension non-AC buses On Ashok Leyland’s luxury range in phases in the coming months. The new buses are being funded by the government to replace 704 KSRTC buses in a phased manner over the past seven years and will be operated by KSRTC SWIFT.

For the first time since 2017, KSRTC is procuring state-of-the-art buses. Out of the Rs 50 crores sanctioned by the Government for the modernisation of KSRTC, Rs 44.84 crores will be utilised for launching 100 brand new buses. With this, KSRTC will be able to attract more long-distance travellers. The government has also ordered the purchase of 16 more buses at the tender rate for the remaining Rs 5.16 crores. With this, 116 buses will be added to KSRTC SWIFT.

The Volvo B11R is geared for exemplary performance under demanding conditions. Among other aggregates, the chassis’ 12-speed I-Shift gearbox, electronically controlled air suspensions and electronic braking systems are notable.

The coach can accommodate 39 berths and provide for 12.5 cu m of personal luggage space. The fully sealed saloon area features fire-retardant grade fabrics, plywood, cushions, and ABS surfaces that convey a premium feel while assuring the highest levels of safety.
